1.2 Graduation and a new home

Time fly by so quickly when you are happy. Before long it had been 2½ years and it was time for graduation. Bob and I were still together, and I was happier than I had ever been.
I had finally told him about my runaway. He was pretty cool about it, but insisted that we talked to his parents about it. First I was nervous about it, since i was afraid they would call social workers on me. But it turned out they were just as cool. They took me in and let me stay there until it we graduated.
As we neared the graduation day, i couldn't help noticing that his parents Mags and Robert Newbie, was planning something in secret. I heard them whisper together in the study now and then when they didn't know either one of us was around. They also went out to meetings now and then for no apparent reason.
Finally the day before graduation, his parents let us in on the big secret.
"So, as you both know, tomorrow it graduation. You will then begin a new chapter in your lives. Your father and I," Mags turned to Bob. "have decided to buy you and Alyce a house. Now it isn't anything fancy, just something to get you two on your own feet. But it is spacious and has all the necessities for two young people starting out."
We were speachless. A house? Together? Even though we practically lived together now, we hadn't actually discussed living together alone. In our own home. But still, this was pretty wonderful.
We looked at eachother. I could see in his eyes that he really wanted this. I took a minute to calm myself. Maybe this would be good for us, considering we had been together for so long now. This was the next step.
Bob was the first person to speak, interrupting my thoughts.
"This is wonderful! Thank you so much, mom and dad." He got up and hugged them both in turns.
"You're welcome dear," Mags said. "Tomorrow after graduation we will drive you to your new home. It is all set up and ready for you to move into."
"My boy, all grown up," His dad was always very emotional. I liked his mom the best, since she always was so nice to me and taught me to cook and bake. That was just a thing we had together.

The next day we woke up early to the sound of music downstairs. The smell of home baked pancakes filled the air in my bedroom. Mmm, i thought. I soon got up, dressed in my graduation robes and walked downstairs to be met with my boyfriend in his robes and his parents, all sitting around the table.
"So, are you ready for today?," his dad asked.
"Yeah." Bob answered, his mouth full of pancake.
I loved these family breakfasts. It was something i hadn't had since my dad left.
"Now it's time to go," Mags said, as we finished our breakfast.
We all went in the family car and Robert drove us to City Hall.
We had to sit through a speech one of our classmates had written. It felt like forever. My thoughts drifted away to our new house, our new future together. Would we get married? Have kids? What would happen now? I had to get a new job. I couldn't keep working at the grocery. The pay wasn't consistent with our soon-to-be rent.
"And finally i want to say to my classmates, that you can be strong, you can be yourself, and you can do what ever you dream to do! Go after your dreams and make yourself happy! That is all that counts." And with that she walked down from the podium. Everyone clapped and greeted her as she walked out with us on her trail, hugging and congratulating each other.
We walked out side and then threw our graduation scrolls in the air.
We chatted with our now former classmates and promised to keep in contact and to see each other again soon etc. etc. All that stuff you say when you know you are not gonna see each other again because you secretly hate one another and so on.
"Are you ready to go?" Robert came over and asked us. Mags was waiting by the car, holding the door open to the backseat. Now was the time to start our new lives.
We drove in silence through the town, heading to our new house.
"Here we are," his mom sing-sang. We looked out the window.
It was amazing. Even though it wasn't fancy at all or decorated a lot, it had all the necessities and the most important things you need for living and having a good life. We weren't going to be cold again anytime soon.
We had our own bedroom, two bathrooms and a spare bedroom, a kitchen and a living room with everything you need.

  1. Congrats to both Alyca and Bob for graduating and loved her valedictorian speech. It was really nice for Bob's parents to get them started in their own home and I like what they've (with help from you) have done with it so far.
